STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping — an internationally recognised set of safety standards that every seafarer, regardless of rank or role, must complete before signing on to a vessel.
The training itself is hands-on and practical. It covers personal survival techniques such as using life rafts and flotation equipment, basic firefighting on board a ship, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibility while living and working at sea.
The reason it is mandatory is straightforward: a ship is a self-contained environment, often days away from outside help. Every crew member needs to know how to respond to a fire, a man-overboard situation, or a medical emergency — not just the officers in charge.
For someone new to the Merchant Navy, STCW training is often one of the very first steps in the journey, alongside a chosen entry pathway like GP Rating, Seaman, or Pre-Sea Training. It is not specific to one role — it is the shared foundation every seafarer builds on.
If you are serious about a Merchant Navy career, treating STCW as a checkbox to tick off would be a mistake. It is genuinely the training that keeps you and your crewmates safe once you are out at sea.
